BREMERTON — Beginning in June, Mauricio Modestin Jr., a professional basketball athlete who previously played for Olympic College, is running a free camp for children ages 5 to 18 at Sheridan Gym in Bremerton to teach basketball fundamentals.

“I am truly blessed to give back to the community along with Edson London, who is the CEO of the BelieveInSelf training,” Modestin wrote in an email. “My goal is to use basketball as a positive tool to help kids get off the streets.”

Modestin, a Panamanian-American from New York, currently lives in Bremerton and is preparing to take the court again in August. He has played overseas in the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Panama — where he will return to play following the summer camp.

While the details of the start date are being ironed out, Modestin said it will begin around the second week of June so it does not interfere with school. The practices will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. at Sheridan Gym with a focus on passing, ball handling, dribble moves, strength and conditioning, defense and form shooting.

“I just love giving back using basketball because it has changed my life,” he said. “God is good and I am truly blessed to be able to give back to the community and kids.”

He and London recently conducted a free Easter weekend camp on March 31 that brought in over 30 kids. He said he hopes to see just as many — if not more — participants this summer. Students interested are encouraged to contact Modestin at bal lupaip23@gmail.com.
