Buc football puts up the effort

On Friday the Bucs traveled to Fife, and once again showed a significant effort improvement on the gridiron, but it wasn’t enough score-wise as Kingston lost 27-12.

“Our kids really came out with a lot of enthusiasm and effort against a Fife team that has gone deep into the playoffs the past couple of years. Although we did not come away with a win on the scoreboard, we really felt like we were the team that wanted to keep playing when the game was over,” head coach Dan Novick wrote in an e-mail.

He wrote the Bucs came out with a great deal of effort and energy in the first half, but lacked poise and turned the ball over on two interceptions —both on tipped passes by Buc receivers — and one fumble. Kingston’s defense was very stout, only giving up one big play on a 48 yard touchdown run, but the Bucs gave Fife the ball in Buccaneer territory too many times, causing Kingston to go into the locker room down 20-0 at the half, having only possessed the ball for 3 minutes and 37 seconds.

In the second half, Kingston added some poise and confidence to the mix, turned the tables, and outscored Fife 12-7. The Bucs possessed the ball for 25:29 during the half, holding Fife to 19 yards rushing and 16 yards passing.

“We were a very happy bunch after the game because we played all out and kind of found ourselves in the second half,” Novick wrote. “We are very excited about the opportunity to pick up where we left off and knock off the No. 5 2A team in the state this week: Steilacoom.”

The Bucs host Steilacoom at the North Kitsap Stadium Friday, game starts at 7 p.m.

Stats: Quarterback Paul Bagala carried the ball eight times for 47 yards and completed 18 passes for 154 yards and two touchdowns; Tucker Bowman had 10 receptions for 98 yards and scored the Bucs two touchdowns. Jason Kramberger had 10 tackles and four assists, Curtis Wildung had eight tackles, one assist and two sacks, and Freddy Rodolf had four tackles, four assists and two sacks.

Viking football takes a hard, close loss

On Friday the Vikes traveled to Olympic for the Trojans homecoming game and lost, 26-24.

Head coach Steve Frease wrote in an e-mail with Friday’s loss the Vikings will play for the Olympic League 3A No. 3 seed if Capital wins. If Capital loses then the Vikings would be No. 2. If the Vikings wind up as No. 3 it will play King Co. No. 2, which will be determined Friday between Mt. Si and Liberty.

Viking girls gymnastics meeting set

For all parents of Viking ninth- through 12th-grade girls interested in gymnastics, an informational parent meeting will be held Tuesday Nov. 4 in the PE classroom at North Kitsap High School. North Kitsap Lacrosse 2009 pre-season meeting set

North Kitsap Lacrosse will hold its 2009 pre-season meeting on Monday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. at The Zone Sportsplex off Finn Hill Rd in Poulsbo. The meeting is open to players, both boys and girls, in grades three through 12. Season overview, team and league requirements and expectations for the upcoming season will be covered. Girls from North Kitsap, Bremerton and South Kitsap are eligible to play on the girls’ team. Boys from North Kitsap and Bremerton are eligible to play on the boys’ team. The registration deadline for the girls’ teams is Nov. 1. The registration fee for girls is $140, $165 after Nov. 1. Registration accepted at the meeting or Poulsbo Parks and Recreation. November 15 is the registration deadline for the boys’ teams. Forms for the boys’ teams can be found online at www.nklax.org or at the meeting.
