NK wins in tough matchup over Sequim | Boys tennis

The Port Angeles boys tennis team went toe-to-toe with the first-place North Kitsap Vikings and came up short in a 4-3 defeat Oct. 6.

POULSBO — The Port Angeles boys tennis team went toe-to-toe with the first-place North Kitsap Vikings and came up short in a 4-3 defeat Oct. 6.

“It was a tough thing to watch as many players continued to make the same mistakes over and over,” Roughriders coach Gil Stockton said of Monday’s match.

Port Angeles’ No. 1 singles player Janson Pederson won his match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Pederson defeated Andrew Leicht. Port Angeles’ No. 3 player Ben Basden won over Scott Lyons, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.

The Riders’ No. 3 doubles team of Kody Kuch and Connor Heilman won their match over Hunter Broughton and Mitch Kunold, 6-3, 6-2.

That’s where Port Angeles’ victories stop, however.

North Kitsap’s Robbie Henshaw took down Nick Fritschler, 6-3, 6-2 in singles play.

In doubles play, Josh Benson and Nicky Butler won in three over Alex Brown and Tanner Gochnour, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. No. 2 doubles team of Joe Creason and Nate McCowen won over Matt Hendry and Elliott Soelter, 6-1, 6-2.  No. 4 doulbes team Jackson Tucker and Grant Nichols defeated Kyler Mabrey and Tyler Nickerson, 6-2, 6-0.

The win over PA kept the Vikings (8-1, 9-1) tied with Sequim. The teams are scheduled to play Oct. 9. Both teams are two games ahead of third place Bremerton (6-2, 7-2).
