NK dominates, sends 8 to districts

North Kitsap’s boys tennis team qualified two singles and three doubles teams for the district championships, the most of any school.

The Olympic League was awarded five allocations and an alternate for the district tournament. So, the top five in the league for each division qualified.

Viking Indigo Gallagher-Zapf finished third in league in singles after beating teammate Dayshawn Harper. Both players swept their competition before falling in the semifinals and dropping to the third-place match. Gallagher-Zapf won the third-place match 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.

Vikings Ethan Gillespie and Mason Chmielewski won each match in two sets, giving up only eight games in all their matches combined. Spencer Gillespie and Justin Gallant finished third after defeating teammates Aiden Reister and David Rutschow.

Bremerton sends one doubles team to districts. After falling in three sets in the semifinals, Knights Jackson Warner and Nicholas Crowley-Koehler snuck into the fifth-place spot.

Kingston coach Mark Calogero and Olympic coach Kristi Gonzalez got their first taste of the Olympic League Championships. Calogero’s squad finished 1-2, winning a match in the loser’s bracket before falling to Port Angeles. Gonzalez’s went 1-4 when ace Ryan Flately defeated teammate Johnatan Mourich in three sets.

Port Angeles has two singles and a doubles team moving forward to the district tournament, too. Roughriders’ Reef Gelder won the singles bracket.

Bremerton’s Jackson Warner and Nicholas Crowley-Koehler are the only Knights to qualify for the district tournament.
