With a loss sandwiched in between, the King’s West girls basketball team recently beat Chief Leschi and Summit by a combined score of 118-26.

The Lady Warriors routed Chief Leschi 64-10 Jan. 9, lost a day later against Evergreen Lutheran, 37-32, then rebounded to beat Summit 54-16 Tuesday.

Bryenne Mosey and Irene Moore provided the bulk of the scoring in the two victories, with Mosey scoring 22 and 16 points, respectively, and Moore scoring 18 and 20.

“The kids are playing hard,” said first-year coach Yvonne Brittain. “I’m really pleased with our progress.”

In fact, Brittain said, the Lady Warriors (6-4) are only a few baskets away from holding a 9-1 record.

Three of the team’s four losses have been by five points or less, including a 36-34 loss against Shoreline Christian in the season-opener.

Much of the success has stemmed from Moore, who in previous seasons was more a distributor than a scorer. Last season she often deferred to Megan Spence, who averaged more than 20 points per game and captured a third SeaTac League Most Valuable Player Award.

But Moore has responded to the challenge, scoring at least 15 points in each of the last three games.

“I’m asking Irene to do a little more scoring than she has in the past,” Brittain said.

Brittain said she also has been impressed with Mosey, who is only a sophomore but is already receiving attention from college scouts.

“She’s been huge,” Brittain said.

Michelle Mosey, Breyenne’s older sister, is back this season after missing last and also has made large contributions, Brittain said.

In the loss against Evergreen Lutheran, KW (6-4) held a 27-25 lead after three quarters. But Evergreen Lutheran outscored KW 12-5 over the final eight minutes to secure the win.

KW hosted Seattle Lutheran last night, but results from that game were unavailable at press time. The team is on the road tomorrow against Rainier Christian.

Boys basketball

For the King’s West boys basketball team, it’s been a forgettable two-week stretch.

The Warriors had played three games, lost three games and extended their losing streak to four games leading into last night’s home game against Seattle Lutheran, which hadn’t concluded before press time.

Back-to-back losses against Chief Leschi and Evergreen Lutheran Jan. 9 and Jan. 10, respectively, dropped the Warriors record to 4-5. The team then lost on the road Tuesday against Summit 72-51 to fall to 4-6.

In the Summit game, Josh Kreifels scored 16 points to lead all KW scorers, while Sam Weldin added 10 and Drew McCullough nine.

The Warriors visit Rainier Christian at 4 p.m. tomorrow as they look to get back on track.
