Local football teams look to sack the competition

Kitsap County Football

(All games 6:30 p.m. unless otherwise noted)

2022 record: 4-5 (3-3)

Coach: Dan Schoonmaker

Key players: Juniors Jack Grant and Garrett Goade

Outlook: The Bainbridge football program is going through a complete restructuring. Schoonmaker takes over as the coach, hoping to bring in a new culture through new tactics, a new coaching tree and new players. The team will look to develop throughout the season.

Schedule: Sept. 1, 7 p.m. at Hazen; Sept. 8, Auburn; Sept. 15, Sequim; Sept. 22, at Olympic; Sept. 29, North Kitsap; Oct. 6, 7 p.m. at North Mason; Oct. 13, at Port Angeles; Oct. 20, Bremerton; Oct. 27, at Kingston

North Kitsap

2022 record: 12-2 (7-0)

Coach: Jeff Weible

Key players: Seniors Logan Sloman and Cole Edwards, and junior Carter Dungy

Outlook: It is championship or bust mentality for the Vikings. A handful of the top teams across the state lost some top players while North Kitsap returns most of its skill players. Even though Lynden is the favorite again, the Vikings are destined to stand atop the throne.

Schedule: Sept. 1, 7 p.m. at Mt. Tahoma; Sept. 8, 7 p.m., Tumwater; Sept. 15, at Port Angeles; Sept. 22, North Mason; Sept. 29, 7 p.m. at Bainbridge; Oct. 6, Kingston; Oct. 13, Bremerton; Oct. 20, 7 p.m. at Sequim; Oct. 27, 7 p.m., Olympic

2022 record: 3-6 (1-5)

Coach: Ethan Goldizen

Key players: Senior Camden Singer and junior Dewaun Swan

Early thoughts: Kingston’s program has been struggling since last season ended. The Buccaneers have their third coach since the summer began and lost over half of the varsity squad. The bright side is most of the linemen return as seniors.

Schedule: Sept. 1, East Jefferson; Sept. 8, 7 p.m. at Rochester; Sept. 15, 7 p.m. at North Mason; Sept. 22, 7 p.m. at Bremerton; Sept. 29, 7 p.m., Sequim; Oct. 6, at North Kitsap; Oct. 13, at Olympic; Oct. 19, Port Angeles; Oct. 27, Bainbridge

2022 record: 8-3 (6-1)

Coach: Sal Quitevis

Key players: Seniors Luke Silva and Silas McAvoy, and junior DeQuan Freeland

Outlook: Olympic lost a lot of talent and depth on both sides of the ball, especially playmakers on offense. The line will be a younger squad with a few key returners looking to keep the Trojans at the top of the Olympic League. On the bright side, South Kitsap’s former head coach Dan Ericson joins the Trojans as the offensive coordinator.

Schedule: Sept. 1, 6 p.m., Eatonville; Sept. 8, 7 p.m. at Renton; Sept. 15, Bremerton; Sept. 22, Bainbridge; Sept. 29, at Port Angeles; Oct. 6, Sequim; Oct. 13, Kingston; Oct. 20, 7 p.m. at North Mason; Oct. 27, at North Kitsap

2022 record: 7-3 (5-2)

Coach: Paul Theriault

Key players- Seniors Oliver Christian, Madden Benson and Trenton Bulmer

Outlook: Bremerton can be one of the teams with a slight chance to overthrow North Kitsap for a league title. Although they lost their top playmaker, they return several linemen, their quarterback and a few playmakers.

Schedule: Sept. 1, Mt. Douglas; Sept. 8, 7 p.m. at Shelton; Sept. 15, at Olympic; Sept. 22, Kingston; Sept. 29, 7 p.m., at North Mason; Oct. 6, Port Angeles; Oct. 13, at North Kitsap; Oct. 20, at Bainbridge; Oct. 26, Sequim

2022 record: 1-8 (1-4)

Coach: Jeff Witte

Key players: Seniors Jackson Kealoha and Nate Turk, and junior Carson Moore

Outlook: Since the Eagles were a younger squad, they should see an uptick in wins this season, especially since their quarterback, top defensive player and offensive weapon all return.

Schedule: Sept. 1, 6 p.m. at Coupeville; Sept. 8, North Mason; Sept. 15, Tenino; Sept. 22, 7 p.m., at Life Christian Academy; Sept. 28, Vashon; Oct. 14, 2 p.m. at Bellevue Christian; Oct. 20, East Jefferson; Oct. 27, 7 p.m., at Sultan; Nov. 3, Cascade Christian

(All games 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted)

Central Kitsap

2022 record: 2-8 (1-6)

Coach: Mark Keel

Key players- Seniors Andy Lin and Maddox Compton, and junior Riley Kolda

Outlook: Central Kitsap returns its quarterback, two of its running backs and a handful of receivers too. However, the Cougars are in a tough league, including state champs Yelm. If the skill players can carry a heavy load, they should have a good season.

Schedule: Sept. 1, at Mariner; Sept. 9, at Bothell; Sept. 15, Yelm; Sept. 21, at Timberline; Sept. 28, Capital; Oct. 6, at Peninsula; Oct. 13, River Ridge; Oct. 20, at Gig Harbor; Oct. 28, North Thurston

South Kitsap

2022 record: 2-8 (1-8)

Coach: Sean Banks

Key players- Seniors Jordan Lee, Nicholas Shockey and Daniel Welch, and juniors Boden Harvey and Josiah Asuega

Outlook: South Kitsap lost its head coach but returns most of its top players. In addition, the SPSL is one of the toughest leagues in the state.

Schedule: Sept. 1, at Bethel; Sept. 7, at Rogers; Sept. 14, Puyallup; Sept. 22, at Olympia; Sept. 28, at Emerald Ridge; Oct. 6, Bellarmine Prep; Oct. 12, at Graham-Kapowsin; Oct. 20, Curtis; Oct. 27, Sumner
