Kitsap swimmers place at districts, head to state

The 1A/2A Kitsap swim teams competed in the West Central District Swim and Dive Championships Feb. 10.

The top five times in each event earned a state allocation.

The North Kitsap Vikings finished third as a team with 136 points, Kingston sixth with 108, Olympic ninth with 78, Klahowya 11th with 37 and Bremerton 15th with 16.

Kingston’s Josh VanHuis, Tyler Chamberlain, Zachary Cummings and Tucker Riffle finished fifth in the 200-yard medley relay in 1 minute, 52.07 seconds.

VanHuis returned to the pool and finished second in the 200 freestyle in 1:54.62.

Olympic’s Tavyn Shelton finished fifth in the 50 free in 23.44 seconds.

NK’s Justin Anderson finished fourth in one-meter diving with 223.20 points, while Rydley Strong was fifth with 192.30.

In the 100 butterfly, Viking Levi McClain finished second in 55.68.

VanHuis won the 500 free in 5:14.27.

In the 200 free relay, NK’s Max Nolan, James Mayou, Henry Maxwell and McClain finished second in 1:37.37.

Shelton won the 100 backstroke in 57.47 seconds, and Cummings won the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.54.

In the 400 free relay, Maxwell, Andrew Gyllensten, Nolan and McClain finished second in 3:36.62. Olympic’s Kaleb Chappell, Jackson DeBritz, Shelton and Sawyer Adams placed fifth in 3:38.87.
