North Kitsap, Kingston, South Kitsap, and Bremerton high schools all competed in seven-on-seven football scrimmages July 2 at Kitsap Bank Stadium in Port Orchard, allowing each coaching staff to get a better look at their players in preparation for the upcoming season.
Two months from now, teams from the West Sound area will be playing in week one games. Currently, teams are hosting seven-on-seven scrimmages to allow players to ‘warm up’ and adequately prepare for the season.
Bremerton hosted the Kingston, Klahowya, North Mason, East Jefferson, and Neah Bay June 25 for seven-on-seven scrimmages, and Bainbridge will be doing the same July 12 by hosting its “Battle of the Bay” football tournament.
Bremerton coach Paul Theriault noted that the Knights’ philosophy for the season is centered around “quality.”
“That’s our philosophy this summer,” Theriault said. “We want our guys to be dedicated and focused and do their best to pick their other teammates up.”
South Kitsap quarterback Franklin Fox began his tenure as starting quarterback at the halfway point of last season. When Fox played last season, he, tackle Jordan Tauave and wide receiver Thomas Frei were the only juniors on the offensive side of the ball.
Fox noted the importance of being able to build confidence as a team through the seven-on-seven scrimmages, especially in the highly competitive South Puget Sound League.
“I think it’s really important to be out here, especially with the guys that aren’t going to get as many reps,” Fox said. “Kids should be in their playbook, learning everything that they know,” Fox said. “Especially two-year, three-year starters.”
