Kingston boys earn first win in school’s history

PORT ANGELES — The Kingston High School boys basketball team is rejoicing this week after its first win in school history.

The two-year-old program defeated the Port Angeles Roughriders 68-57 Jan. 27 in an overtime nail biter at Port Angeles.

“It was a long time coming,” said head coach Tim Olson. “We played with focus and composure and pulled off our first win.”

The Buccaneers played tight the entire game, and led for most of the second half.

Then, with 33 seconds to go in regulation, the Roughriders took the lead.

But KHS sophomore Lou Hecker went to the line and sank two free throws to tie things up with less than 10 ticks left on the clock.

In overtime, the Bucs made the game their own, outscoring the Roughriders 15-4.

“We were prepared to play the extra four minutes and our conditioning took over for us,” Olson said.

Sophomore guard George Hill led the Bucs, grabbing 11 rebounds and putting up 23 points, including five three-pointers.

Aaron Lawrence and Zane Ravenholt each had a good night as well, scoring 14 and 12 points, respectively.

“It felt good,” Lawrence said of the win. “It was what we needed over the course of the year.”

The guys didn’t have much of a celebration, though, other than a raucous ride home Tuesday night.

“We had a fun time on the bus back,” Ravenholt said. “Everybody was cheering loud and happy.”

Wednesday, it was back to business as usual on the practice court.

According to Olson, Tuesday’s victory was no fluke. The Bucs travel to Sequim today, and the players and coaches are optimistic about their chances for a second win.

“We are making progress and starting to play with confidence,” Olson said. “Good things will come to those who work.”
