Kitsap boasts 9 2nd-, 3rd-place finishers at state on last day

On the final day of the state track meet at Mount Tahoma May 25, Kitsap County had no champions, but it can boast nine second- and third-place finishers.

After winning state titles in the javelin and discus, Grace Degarimore of South Kitsap finished second in the 4A girls shot put with a throw of 42 feet, 10.75 inches. Bainbridge’s Claire Hungerford finished second in the 3A girls 300 hurdles in 45.40 seconds, 0.3 seconds behind the winner.

Bainbridge had four boys compete in the 3A pole vault finals. Yafei Shou of Bainbridge tied for second in the boys pole vault in 3A with a mark of 14 feet. Teammates Isaac Ellis and Jonas Michael tied for third with marks of 13-6.

Bremerton’s Dallin Anderson placed third in the 800 in 1 minute, 55.39 seconds, while teammate Isaiah Cadengo placed third in the 400 in 48.68. South Kitsap’s Isaac Benjamin was third in the 4A 3200 in 9 minutes, 13.97 seconds.

Klahowya’s Natalie Oathout was the only Eagle to compete on the final day, placing third in the 1A girls 3200 in 11 minutes, 46.64 seconds.

SK’s Cheyanne Barker placed fourth in the girls 100 meter in 12.70 seconds. Teammate Lauren Laws placed fifth in the 800 in 2:15.15.

Bremerton’s Cadengo, Kosh Leuders, Oliver Horton and Anderson placed fifth in the 4×400 relay in 3:27.69. Teammate Cecilia Powell was fifth in the girls 400 in 58.55.

CK’s Audra Palmer placed fifth in the 3A girls 800 in 2 minutes, 14.70 seconds.

NK’s Matthew Fee was fifth in the 800 in 1 minute, 57.13 seconds. Salix Wartes-Kahl placed sixth in the girls 800 in 2:20.51. Calina Morgan placed sixth in the girls 100 meters in 12.88 seconds. Logan Sloman placed seventh in the 100 meters in 11.65 seconds and seventh in the 200 in 22.90.

CK’s Mana Voss finished sixth in the 800 in 1:54.30. Teammates Mailey Grace Dayao, Camryn Bishoff, Taylor and Audra Palmer placed eighth in the girls 4×400 relay in 4:06.57. CK’s Claire Herring was 10th in the girls 3200 in 1:07.96. Michael Vlach was 10th in the 3200 in 9:23.35.

Spartan Mairin O’Brien was 12th in the girls 3200 in 11:21.56. Teammate Ben Crandall was 16th in the 3200 in 9:51.03.

NK’s Kyle Oppliger was 14th in the 2A high jump with 5 feet, 6 inches. Viking Quinny Stuart placed 16th in the 3200 in 9:56.51.

Kingston’s Lucas Lenz placed 18th in the 2A boys 3200 in 9 minutes, 59.69 seconds. Bremerton’s Salleen Mattivi did not finish the girls 3200.

Day 2

Bainbridge’s Ella McRitchie placed first in the pole vault, and South Kitsap’s Degarimore won the javelin for her second state title to lead Kitsap County athletes in the second day of the state Track and Field Meet at Mount Tahoma May 24.

McRitchie set a personal record in winning her title with a mark of 14 feet, 3 inches in the girls 3A pole vault.

In the 4A girls javelin, Degarimore won at 136-3. Teammate Rylee Filbert finished eighth at 117-10.

Central Kitsap’s Savannah Fourier was third in the 3A girls high jump at 5-2 inches.

North Kitsap’s Kai Espiritu was tied for ninth in the pole vault at 12 feet. Corinne Aala was 10th in the girls discus at 100-7, and Phoebe Aala was 13th at 97-11. Bella Johnston and Kayla Skistimias tied for 13th in the girls pole vault with 8-6.

Brad LeVine of BHS was 14th in the 3A javelin throw at 150-2.

SK’s TeSypress Aupaau was 16th in the shot put at 42 feet.

Also finals Friday were the hurdle events. The other running events were preliminaries with the top eight making it to today’s finals.

Bainbridge’s Hungerford was fourth in the girls 100 meters in 16.02 seconds. Teammate Sabine Hartenstine was disqualified for interference.

Kingston’s Leighton Menge placed seventh in the girls 100 hurdles finals in 16.97 seconds.

Hungerford won the 3A girls 300 hurdles prelim in 44.67 seconds.

Moving on to the finals for North Kitsap were: Fee, who was second in the 800 in 1:55.78; Wartes-Kahl, who was third in the girls 800 in 2:19.34; Sloman, who was fifth in the 200 in 22.89 seconds and seventh in the 100 meter prelims in 11.3 seconds; and Morgan, who was seventh in the girls 100 meters in 12.76. Sloman, Kyree McGinty, Cohen Meis and Solomon Furner finished ninth in the 4×100 really in 43.54 seconds, just missing the finals. Julie Castillejo, Johnston, Mikayla Burton and Morgan were 13th in the girls 4×100 relay in 51.80 seconds.

Bremerton’s Cadengo won the 2A 400 prelims in 49.26 seconds. Anderson was third in the 800 in 1:55.20. Powell was eighth in the girls 400 event in 59.42. She was ninth in the 200 meters in 26.68, again just missing the finals. In the 100 meters, Cadengo was 13th in 11.55 seconds.

Olympic’s Olivia Jackson, Savannah Mitchell, LaQuinta Curtis and Mia Talarico were ninth in the girls 4×100 relay in 51.07 seconds. Talarico followed with a 12th-place finish in the 200 meters in 26.79. Joshua Turner finished 17th in the 800 in 2:04.55.

Central Kitsap’s Palmer was sixth in the 800 in 2:18.61 seconds while Taylor Palmer finished 16th in 2:22.60. Blake Reynolds finished 21st in the 3A 800 in 2:06.34 while Mana Voss did not finish.

Klahowya’s Maggie Keenan was fourth in the 300 hurdles in 15.84 seconds. Audrey Younger was seventh in the 100 meter prelims in 12.66 seconds. Tyler Larson was eighth in the 1A 800 in 1:59.06 seconds.

Missing the cut for Klahowya were: Aiden Smith, Larson, Carson Wintch and Nathan Morrison 11th in the 4×400 relay in 3:33.55. Morrison finished 12th in the 300 hurdles in 42.60. Natalie Oathout finished 12th in the 800 in 2:28.07. Macayla Wratartic, Jordan Clark, Oathout and Younger finished 16th in the 4×400 relay. And Deacon Wintch finished 17th in the pole vault with a mark of 11 feet.

South Kitsap’s Barker placed fourth in the 4A girls 100 meters in 12.53 seconds and just missed the finals by placing ninth in the 200 meters in 26.21. Laws was seventh in the 800 in 2:14.24. Octavian Clark was 11th in the 100 meters in 11.18 seconds.

Day 1

A girls state champion and a runner-up highlighted the first day of competition for Kitsap County at the state 2A-3A-4A Track & Field Meet.

Leading the boys was James Rebman of North Kitsap, who was third in the javelin with a throw of 172 feet.

In 4A, Degarimore of South Kitsap was the state champion in the girls discus with a throw of 164 feet, 8 inches.

She beat the second-place mark by almost 26 feet. Teammate Kennedy Feldhacker was 15th with her toss of 98-1.

Clark of SK was ninth in the long jump with a mark of 21-1/4 inches.

SK was second in the girls team scoring with 15 points.

In 2A, Rylee Wheaton of Bremerton was second in the girls shot put with a toss of 38 feet-2 1/4 inches.

Ethan White of NK was 10th in the triple jump with a leap of 40-10.

Also in the javelin, NK’s Lincoln Gould was 11th at 152-9.

Bremerton was tied for sixth in the girls team scoring with 8 points.

In the boys team scoring NK was tied for seventh with 6 points.

In 3A, Fourier of Central Kitsap was 16th in the girls javelin with a throw of 108 feet, 7 inches.

For the boys, Matthew Rolley of CK was 17th in the shot put with a throw of 45-10 1/4 inches.

Most of the running events were prelims, except for the 1600 meters.

For the girls in 4A, Laws of SK was fourth in 4 minutes, 58.45 seconds.

In 3A, Audrey Palmer of CK was 11th in 5:02.92 seconds. Teammate Taylor Palmer was 15th in 5:16.57.

In 2A, Wartes-Kahl was 13th for NK with a time of 5:26.46 seconds.

For the boys in 3A, CK had four runners. Voss was 14th in 4 minutes, 19.06 seconds, while Michael Vlach was 16th in 4:22.69; Reynolds 17th in 4:23.41, and Gavin Brown 18th in 4:32.14.

Those were the only finals of the day.

Kitsap also did well in the prelims. The top eight in each event move on to the final.

For the 3A girls, Hungerford of Bainbridge was second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.52 seconds. Teammate Hartenstine just missed making the finals by placing ninth in 16.19 seconds.

For 2A girls, Menge of Kingston qualified for the finals by placing sixth with a time of 16.34 seconds.

In the boys 2A 1600-meter relay, Bremerton placed fifth with a time of 3:24.7 to make the finals. In 3A, CK was 21st with its time of 3:33.99.

In the 3A girls 1600 relay, CK made the final by placing seventh in 4:04.86. Bainbridge was 19th in 4:09.18.

In the 2A 1600-meter girls relay, NK was 12th with a time of 4:13.38.

In the 2A girls 800-meter relay, Olympic’s team was disqualified.
