A recap of what was a busy weekend in Bremerton sports:

Track and field

The Bremerton track and field team competed in the 16-team South Kitsap Invitational at South Kitsap High School on Saturday, finishing 13th in the boys meet with nine points and 14th in the girls meet with 24.5 points.

Sophomore Kyle Kennedy finished second in the javelin to give the boys’ team its highest placer. Kennedy, who posted a 175-foot-7-inch throw to finish ninth in the javelin at the 2008 Class 3A state track and field championships in Pasco, threw a 177-04 in the finals to finish second behind South Kitsap’s Sean Allison (179-06).

Kennedy was the lone Knight to earn a Top 5 finish in the boys competition, although sophomore Gabriel Kirkland earned eighth in the shot put with a 42-10. He also finished 18th in the discus (104-08).

BHS’ other top boys finishers included seniors David Fry, who finished 14th in the 3,200-meter race, and Isaac Anderson, who finished 10th in the pole vault.

Federal Way won the boys team title with 136 points, ahead of second-place South Kitsap (107) and third-place White River (68). Olympic’s 61 points was good for fourth.

Stephanie Himmelsbach, a senior, carried the load for BHS on the girls side to earn four Top 10 finishes, including a second-place finish in the 100 hurdles on a time of 16.83 seconds. She also earned third in the 300 hurdles, fifth in the high jump and sixth in the javelin, an event she picked up at the beginning of the season.

A trio of freshmen — Khadijsha DeWalt, Jullisha Johnson and Leah Straub — accounted for the remaining Top 10 finishes for the girls team.

DeWalt earned ninth in the 100 (13.53), Johnson took eighth in the shot put (29-01.00) and Straub finished sixth in the pole vault (7-00.00).

South Kitsap captured the girls team title with 94 points, topping Federal Way (69), Bainbridge (65), Auburn Riverside (65) and Archbishop Murphy (64.5).

Baseball

After an 11-2 loss against Klahowya at home Friday, the Knight hardballers still have yet to win a game.

BHS (0-11 overall, 0-9 league) fell behind 7-1 after three innings and didn’t score again until the bottom of the seventh with the game well in hand. Charles Wilson was 1-for-2 with three stolen bases to lead the Knights on offense.

The team is at Sequim at 4 p.m. today and hosts Port Angeles at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Fastpitch

With a chance to win its second consecutive game, the BHS fastpitch team was shut out by Klahowya at Lions Park Friday, 16-0.

KSS’ Meika Bumbalough was 3-for-5 with five RBI, including a grand slam, and starting pitcher Kazandra Holliday allowed just one hit and struck out 15.

BHS committed five errors on defense.

The Lady Knights (2-5) face Sequim on the road at 4 p.m. today and host Port Angeles at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Boys soccer

Matt Olson scored two goals to boost his season total to 16, but the Bremerton boys soccer team lost to Port Townsend at home Friday, 3-2.

Olson’s first score, in the 10th minute, put the Knights ahead 1-0. His second goal, in the 50th minute, made it 2-0.

But Port Townsend scored three times over the next 14 minutes — in the 52nd, 60th and 66th minute — to secure the victory.

The Knights (4-3-2 overall, 2-1-2 league) visit Sequim at 6:45 p.m. today and host Kingston at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday.
