Hard work leads to recovery of summer chum...
    September 1, 2015 2:31 pm

Hood Canal/Eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca summer chum is the only threatened salmon population in western Washington showing clear signs of recovery. It’s thanks to a 20-year cooperative effort by state and tribal salmon co-managers, conservation groups, local governments and federal agencies that is balancing the key ingredients needed for recovery: harvest, hatcheries and habitat.

A ride prior to setup at the Kitsap County Fair.
Coordinating Kitsap County Fair is a ‘ballet’
    August 27, 2015 2:36 pm

Starting last Wednesday, the Kitsap county fair has been in full swing: The rides, the food, the displays and all the animals are a great time to be had for all. But how did all this happen?

According to Sunny Saunders, the Kitsap lead safety manager, planning for the next year’s fair begins as soon as the previous one is over. The fair board holds monthly meeting year-round to plan and coordinate all aspects of fair management.

    Fast ferries or Sunday buses?
    Fast ferries or Sunday buses?
    August 24, 2015 3:44 pm

I have been observing discussions at public meetings and around the community about Kitsap Transit’s priorities, funding and services. Those conversations usually involve the restoration of Sunday bus service or the proposed restoration of the 30-minute fast ferry to Seattle.

As part of the recession cuts, Kitsap Transit and its executive board cut Sunday bus service to the poor, disabled and mobility challenged to meet budget demands. I think as a community we all swallowed hard and understood it as a necessary step to address the financial challenges at the time.

    August 6, 2015 2:52 pm

There is an article floating around about United Way and Planned Parenthood Funding. An Article in Forbes Magazine lists 68 United Ways across the country that seemingly support Planned Parenthood; however, what the article does not tell you is that most of these United Ways, including United Way of Kitsap County do not directly support Planned Parenthood. In reference to United Way of Kitsap County, the only dollars that have gone to Planned Parenthood are dollars that donors have designated to Planned Parenthood. As Paul Harvey used to say, “For the rest of the Story” read on:

There are two kinds of people in this world: Those who like beaches, and those who prefer lakes. Well, actually, there are also those people who mouth the words of someone who is speaking to them (how do they do that?), and those who do not. But for the purpose of this column, you are either a lake person or beach person.

The logic of video games was pretty simple, and utterly false, when I was 12 years old and playing “Super Mario Bros.” on Nintendo. The “logic” began when the game cartridge wouldn’t work, and blowing on the insides usually fixed it. Nothing else in real life is this simple. I have never blown air on a broken toaster and thought that it would work.

    July 30, 2015 1:37 pm

Unfortunately, Seattle Congressman Jim McDermott (D) was correct earlier this year when he said Canada’s west coast ports are “eating our lunch!”

Both Washington and British Columbia are blessed with deep water seaports that are closer to Asian markets than those in California, the Gulf states and our nation’s eastern seaboard. There is a rich trade tradition in the Northwest, and for many years, the ports of Seattle and Tacoma were preferred by shippers because they could move large volumes of cargo rapidly.

    July 30, 2015 1:35 pm

It is to the benefit of the City of Bremerton, the Suquamish Tribe and the descendants of Roberta Law Ross to work together to determine the best economic development course for the Ross descendants’ trust land at 1321 N. Callow Ave.

Much of the area was undeveloped when Ross, a woman of Quinault and Samish parentage living in Bremerton, was allotted the land — a little over three-quarters of an acre — in exchange for waterfront property for naval shipyard expansion in the 1920s; because she was Native American, the U.S. government placed the land in trust — meaning, the U.S. holds the title to protect Native American ownership.
