While filling out your taxes this year, count yourself lucky. Yes, you may have to write a check to the IRS. Yes, you may spend some of the remaining hair on your head combing through instructions online. However, before you start feeling sorry for yourselves, consider the plight of poor General Electric. As the New York Times reported last week, the multinational has gone through much hassle to avoid paying federal taxes after a year of $14.2 billion in worldwide profits.

As school class sizes grow, as unemployment holds steady, as services to help you when you get into a pinch are cut, as two wars paid for with credit cards linger on  — and we add another — remember that it could be worse.
