Youth center, apartment unit proposed in Port Orchard

A former movie theater on Port Orchard’s Mile Hill Drive could soon be transformed into a hub for youth activities, and a small apartment project is also being reconsidered on Pottery Avenue, per updates shared during the city’s Economic Development and Tourism Committee meeting Sept. 8.

Community development director Nick Bond said the city recently held two pre-application meetings for proposed projects.

“The first one is pretty exciting, it has to do with redeveloping the old movie theater on Mile Hill,” Bond said. “We had a proposal come in that would convert that building to both a dance and gymnastics studio.”

Bond said the project would require significant demolition work to level out the sloped theater floors. Plans call for one large gymnastics area, several dance studios, and a small café near the entrance.

“This would become a pretty active space and I think we had a productive meeting. We’re hoping that this thing will move forward,” he said.

The second pre-application involved a proposed 24-unit apartment development on the north side of Pottery Avenue, where the road goes under Highway 16. Bond said the project was first floated five or six years ago but has since been revised to meet the city’s design standards.

“Whether they will go forward or not, I’m not sure, but we’ve met with them and I think eventually something like this is going to happen here, it’s just a matter of when,” Bond said.
