What’s going on at North Kitsap High School?

POULSBO — At the end of 2005, North Kitsap High School posed the question, “What do parents want to know about NKHS?” Questions came through three informal parent/administrator discussion sessions. Now the answers will be provided at monthly parent informational forums — the first of which will be held at 7 p.m. tomorrow at the NKHS commons.

The forum will be focused on two pivotal issues: Small Learning Communities and drugs and alcohol at NKHS. At the forum, there will be brief informational presentations concerning each topic followed by time for discussion, observations and questions.

NKHS is in the process of completing a transition from the traditional, comprehensive high school setting to that of a school consisting of clusters of students that would remain constant throughout their high school careers. The estimated implementation is the beginning of the 2007 school year along with the opening of Kingston High School.

The SLC portion of the January forum will be an update of where NKHS is in the planning process and will offer an opportunity for parents’ questions to be answered.

“What are (SLCs) and how different will high school be to my student as a result?” KHS planning principal Bruce Saari said of what the introductory forum will address.

The drug and alcohol portion will be straight-forward discussion, comparing rumors and reality. Parents and administrators have long been concerned about drug and alcohol abuse at NKHS and the school hopes to discern fact from fiction.

Since SLCs generated the largest response of any topic by parents, extended discussion of the process will take place after the 7:40 p.m. cutoff — if so desired — and the drug and alcohol awareness info will be presented in a different area.

This forum will be the first session of what is planned to be an ongoing dialogue between the parents and the school about many topics.
