Trial set in shooting deaths of Olalla couple

Rose pleads not guilty to both counts of first-degree murder

The tentative trial date is set for mid-October in the case of a man suspected of killing an Olalla couple.

Shaun Rose, 40, a convicted felon with previous charges of first-degree burglary and theft from 2021, is being held without bond and faces two counts of first-degree murder with aggravated circumstance for the killings of 51-year-olds Steven and Mina Shulz, owners of East 2 West Brewing in Olalla.

Rose has pleaded not guilty to both counts and could face life in prison with no possibility of parole if convicted.

Meanwhile, Kitsap County detectives are seeking help in identifying a woman known to be with Rose on the day he allegedly killed the Shulzes. A photo shows her at a Burger King in Puyallup.

Anyone with information on who the woman is can call detective Jennifer Rice with the KCSO at 360-337-5616 or email kcsodetectives@kitsap.gov

Court documents state that Alicia Shulz, Steve and Mina’s daughter, went to check on her parents at their house on Shady Glen Avenue around 5:15 p.m. Aug. 18. She was unable to find them but called police after discovering pieces of shattered glass and trace amounts of blood in the bedroom.

Kitsap County deputies later found the bodies of the couple in a garbage can. Police also found evidence of burglary, noting that multiple items were missing, including Mina’s wallet.

Rose’s girlfriend, Danielle, told officials that she left for work at 12:30 a.m. that day and that Rose asked her for a ride but exited her vehicle at the end of the street on Shady Glen Avenue. Detectives later found that Rose had been living in an RV there. Multiple witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots around two hours later. At 3:30 am, Danielle told detectives that Rose had asked for another ride, but she said no.

Later that day, Rose was arrested and later released in Tacoma at 5:30 p.m. after driving a Toyota Prius that was stolen from the 10000 block of Bowe Lane Southeast in Port Orchard, a little more than two miles from the Shulz’s home. Upon recovery of the vehicle, the owner found credit cards and ID belonging to the deceased couple.

Three days later on Aug. 21, Rose was arrested in Tacoma again after a woman called 911 to report that he was in a car with her. Acting on a warrant for Rose’s arrest, police transported him to the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office for booking.

Court officials said that while the date sits at Oct. 17, an update is likely to occur following court Sept. 13.
