A woman who thought she landed a job as a mystery shopper, evaluating local stores for their customer service, found herself the victim of a $2,600 scam.

Kitsap County sheriff’s deputies were called by the 19-year-old Silverdale woman last month after she discovered she had been tricked, according to reports.

The woman said she found the job listing on Craigslist.com and was contacted by a company calling itself Barrick Gold Corporation, which forwarded along the check. She deposited the check in her bank, suspicious it was invalid, but told deputies a bank employee told her it cleared.

The man said she had instructions to visit a local department store, buy something, then return the unused money along with an evaluation. After finishing the job, she was notified by the bank the check was invalid. The woman told deputies she only proceeded because the bank informed her it was a good check, and said the bank employee accused her of attempting to scam the bank.
