Suspect dead following officer-involved shooting in Poulsbo

One person is dead after an incident involving the Poulsbo Police Department and Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office May 7 at around 9:15 p.m., PPD announced in a news release.

KCSO deputies responded to the area of Viking Way and Nordic Cove Lane to assist officers from PPD, who were following a vehicle that was refusing to stop for one of their officers. Once the vehicle was stopped, officers encountered the suspect driver, who was armed with a large knife and presented a “lethal threat to the officers and deputies on scene,” per the release.

The suspect allegedly refused to comply with orders given by officers who were attempting to take the suspect into custody.

“After attempts to de-escalate and the use of non-lethal options were unsuccessful, the suspect continued to present a lethal threat to officers, causing the use of deadly force, which resulted in the death of the suspect,” the release states.

No officers or deputies were injured in the incident.

The Kitsap County Medical Examiner identified the deceased suspect May 13 as 41-year-old Justin L. Moegling of Bremerton. Cause of death was listed as gunshot wounds to the head, with other significant conditions being gunshot wounds to the extremities. The manner of death is homicide.

The officers and deputies involved in the incident have been placed on critical incident or administrative leave, per agency policies. The state Office of Independent Investigations was notified and responded to the scene to investigate.
