stirring up a musical wind

As the blustery March weather continues to pound Kitsap County, music lovers can take refuge from the storm for an evening with another type of breeze, this one of a musical variety. Continuing the Bremerton Symphony’s “wind” theme, a mix of classical, folk and sacred music is on the program for the Bremerton Symphony Concert Chorale’s next concert, “Music in the Air,” March 18 at the Sylvan Way Baptist Church.

Chorale Director LeeAnne Campos will direct the group, which is under the umbrella of the Bremerton Symphony Association. Pianist Miriam Haddon will accompany the chorus.

The program begins with Christiansen’s “Light Everlasting,” then goes into a quartet of songs, “Quartre Motets,” by Durufle, followed by Lauridsen’s “O Nata Lux” and Vaughn-Williams’ hymn, “Lord, Thou Hast Been Our Refuge.”

After intermission the program continues with Debussy’s “Trois Chansons,” followed by the rousing “Barber of Seville Overture,” by Rossini. The focus shifts to American music with three folk songs by Copland, “The Boatmen’s Dance,” “Long Time Ago” and “I Bought Me a Cat.”

The program concludes with two spirituals by Hogan, “There is a Balm in Gilead” and “Music Down in My Soul.”

Campos, who lives in Tacoma, also teaches private voice lessons at Pacific Lutheran University, sings in the Tacoma Symphony Chorus, the Northwest Lutheran Choir and the St. Gabriel Church Choir, and directs Lyrica, Ladies Choral Ensemble of Puget Sound.

This is her second season as Chorale Director for the Bremerton Symphony Association.
