Sewage spill near Keyport boat ramp prompts no-contact advisory

Advisory issued for shoreline from Lemolo Point to Point Bolin, including Nesika Bay

PORT ORCHARD— The Kitsap Public Health District issued a three-day no-contact advisory Aug. 8 for the shoreline from Lemolo Point to Point Bolin, including Nesika Bay, because of a sewage spill near the Keyport boat ramp and marina.

The advisory will remain in effect through Aug. 10, the health district reported.

According to Kitsap County Public Works, the spill occurred around 9:25 a.m. on Aug. 8 and was less than 2,000 gallons. The spill occurred during an outgoing tide so Liberty Bay was not impacted.

Kitsap Public Health is posting signs at public access areas in Keyport and Nesika Bay. The Suquamish Tribe has been notified and will follow their own procedures for notification of people living on Tribal land. Shellfish harvesting is already closed in the impacted area because of high levels of marine biotoxins.

During a no-contact advisory, the public is advised to avoid contact with the water in the affected area, the health district reported. This means no swimming, wading, or types of water play where water could be swallowed or get in the mouth, nose or eyes. People should also avoid direct skin contact if possible, and immediately wash with soap and water if they have exposure to the water. Boats and kayaks should also be cleaned after exposure to the affected area.
