The Poulsbo City Council passed an ordinance at its Dec. 17 meeting to ban the sale, possession and discharge of consumer fireworks in city limits, which goes into effect in one year.
Poulsbo joins Bainbridge Island as the only two cities in Kitsap County with a complete ban on fireworks. The city of Poulsbo held an advisory ballot measure in the November general election asking city voters if fireworks should be prohibited in the city. The votes were 64.02% in favor (2820 votes) and 35.98% against (1585 votes), per city documents.
Currently, under Poulsbo Municipal Code, consumer fireworks may be sold and purchased from noon until 11 p.m. June 28, 9 a.m. until 11 p.m. June 29 through July 4, 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. July 5, and noon to 11 p.m. Dec. 27-31. Consumer fireworks may only be discharged between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m. July 4, documents state.
On March 19, the council adopted an ordinance that prohibits consumer fireworks from being sold and purchased July 5 and Dec. 27-31. The changes take effect one year from the date the ordinance passed.
