Pedestrian struck by moving vehicle in downtown Poulsbo crosswalk

POULSBO — At about 4 p.m. April 25, Fabiola Sanso crossed Front Street from Hot Shots Java to meet her husband, in a parked car across the street, and was struck in the crosswalk by a VW Passat that was backing up.

The driver, who had been driving north on Front Street, passed the downtown crosswalk, noticed a parking space at the Marina Market parking lot, and reversed so she could turn right into the parking lot. While moving in reverse, her car struck Sanso.

“It was in slow motion, but when you look at it, you see it happening in front of you and there’s nothing you can do,” said Sanso’s husband, George Sanso.

Sanso witnessed the event as he sat in their vehicle waiting for his wife to cross the street. He said although she was lying on the ground for a few minutes, she was coherent and talking.

Officials said she would be transported to Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton to ensure she was alright.

“You never know with a fall like that. The victim was older, but she did get up and walk into the ambulance,” Poulsbo Police Sgt. Howard Leeming said.

Sanso said his wife complained of pain to her elbow and right hip.

The driver of the VW was upset and said she was very sorry.

“I’m 66 years old and I’ve never been in an accident,” she said. “I didn’t even see her there. I’m just so sorry and I hope she’s OK.”
