Passenger-only ferry vote Feb. 6

A public vote to increase sales tax will decide whether Kitsap Transit's proposal will be funded to provide passenger-only ferry service to Seattle.

A make-or-break proposal by Kitsap Transit to fund passenger-only ferries to Seattle from Kingston, Port Orchard, Bremerton and Southworth, will be put to voters the end of this month when ballots are mailed out for the Feb. 6 election.

Residents will be asked to approve a sales tax increase of three-tenths of one percent to help Kitsap Transit fund up to 40 percent of the operational costs for POF. Operational and capital expenses will also be covered by the $7-$9 round-trip fares and federal and state supplemental funds.

According to Kitsap Transit executive director Dick Hayes, in 2007-2008 there will be initially three peak morning runs, one mid-day and three peak afternoon runs with secondary service possible on evenings and weekends.

Kitsap Transit will buy Aqua Express’ interest in the Kingston POF dock, Hayes said. The Port of Kingston will retain the remainder of ownership.

POF service to Seattle could begin by September, and is anticipated to draw ridership away from Bainbridge Island ferries and divert residents of Jefferson County to the Kingston runs.
