Creating art tends to be a solitary pursuit; artist and canvas, alone in a studio. But occasionally, even artists need the company of others.
A group of artists in central Kitsap County found they enjoyed the camaraderie at art classes and workshops held at Daniel Smith art supply store in Silverdale, and when it closed they felt cast adrift.
POULSBO — When the Poulsbo City Council took its first test drive through the city’s proposed 20-year transportation plan Dec. 13, it ran into a $44 million pothole.
That pothole is the estimated cost of traffic improvements to maintain the city’s current level of service, and fortunately consultant Mike Birdsall had a patch to fill the void.
As boxes full of ornaments, lights and Christmas cheer are brought down from attics, dusted off and opened, fond memories of holidays past are also returning to life.
In the rush of holiday shopping, many of these happy remembrances can get lost in the shuffle. Here are a few from well-known locals to rekindle recollections in households throughout the North End.
SUQUAMISH — After years of doing the best she could with garage sales, antique stores and discount furniture, Jill Stenerson now has a chance to relax on a brand new sofa. Or the brand new chair that accompanied the sofa into her living room.
Stenerson won Northwest Design Center’s Living Room Make-Over contest in September, and is now decking her new living room with tinsel, Christmas carols and presents
POULSBO — A rescheduled match-up with Mount Tahoma — which was supposed to be played last week — gave North Kitsap something to think about as they enter the holiday madness.
The Thunderbirds came to the NK gym and schooled the Vikes with a resounding 84-49 lesson.
On a recent rainy night in Port Orchard a group of women sat around a craft table in a rec room crowded with art supplies, from paints and brushes to ornaments waiting to be painted. They were there to paint gingerbread men ornaments, but they were also there to talk about orphans half a world away who had none of these things. They wanted to change that.
POULSBO — The recommendation for North Kitsap’s school-related athletics has been handed to the NKSD board and now it awaits final approval early next year.
Only a handful of community members attended a rescheduled study session on the matter Monday night.
POULSBO — After defeating incumbent 23rd District state Representative Bev Woods in the November general election, Christine Rolfes got right to work.
The former Bainbridge Island city councilwoman will join the Democratic supermajority in the state House along with fellow 23rd District Rep. Sherry Appleton (D-Poulsbo).
As she prepares for her first term, Rolfes said working on improving the state’s public education and healthcare systems are among her top priorities.
The annual Sounds of the Season community talent show at the Admiral Theatre may be an amateur talent show, but you wouldn’t know it from the level of talent involved.
More than 50 singers, dancers and musicians tried out for the community talent show; only 18 were chosen.
They will take to the stage Dec. 21 to compete for the $500 grand prize, and the priceless adoration of the audience. Seattle comic Greg Bennick will once again serve as Master of Ceremonies.
And now for something completely different.
They call it a “Holiday Spectacular,†but don’t expect to be able to sing along to favorite, traditional holiday carols. The Lurie Brothers are anything but traditional.
For those seeking relief from the holidays, check out the Sixth Annual Lurie Brothers Holiday Spectacular, Dec. 23 at Pegasus Coffee House on Bainbridge Island.
POULSBO — More than 500,000 readers from around the world attempted to break a Guinness World Record by simultaneously reading aloud a one-page passage from the E.B. White masterpiece — “Charlotte’s Web†on Dec. 13.
It was also the day when power was out at Poulsbo’s schools until around 3 p.m. Poulsbo Elementary — one of those three schools — was slated to support 300 students in the record-breaking attempt that day.
‘Tis the season to gather with those who are important: family, friends, neighbors and acquaintances. One such place many North End residents go to meet those people during the holidays is church.
Here are Christmas service listings for several churches in the area….

It seems the North Kitsap School District’s Athletics and Activities Committee has run the mental gamut of sports possibilities for the North Kitsap School District in 2007-2008.
What started with the charge of creating more opportunities for kids to participate has yielded a recommendation that features 13 additional interscholastic sports teams and eight middle school intramural possibilities.
POULSBO — In addition to causing power outages, Thursday night’s windstorm blew in a bounty of donations to the Bellringer Fund.
By 10 a.m. Monday, the fund had collected another $4,006.06, which adds to the number of successful days it has already enjoyed. Those donations put the fund above the $20,000 mark and leave less than $10,000 to go before it reaches its $30,000 goal.
