OSPI announces schools may waive “makeup” days

North Kitsap, Central Kitsap, Bremerton and South Kitsap School Districts will remain closed for the third consecutive day Wednesday, with a state of emergency still in effect in Washington.

Because of this, districts will be able to apply for a waiver to ensure missed school days during the emergency do not have to be made up, though districts must have 1,027 hours of instruction for students.

A statement released Wednesday by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Chris Reykdal confirmed this.

“State law allows the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) to waive missed school days, and school districts will have the opportunity to apply to waive days that were missed while the state of emergency was in effect,” Reykdal wrote. “However, there is no legal authority to waive the mandatory average of 1,027 hours of instruction for students.”

Generally, school districts have schedules that take instruction beyond the required 1,027 hours. Districts can either add days to the end of the year or extend early release days to meet their obligation if needed.
