NKSD must watch its step

Location, location, location. Perhaps the North Kitsap School District should have considered the old real estate mantra before setting its sights on land that looks to be causing more controversy than consensus on West Kingston Road.

Location, location, location. Perhaps the North Kitsap School District should have considered the old real estate mantra before setting its sights on land that looks to be causing more controversy than consensus on West Kingston Road.

Hindsight is and always will be 20/20 but it appears that the NKSD has too much invested in the proposed future location of Kingston High School to back out now. Too much money has already been spent on surveys, schematics and options to simply move elsewhere.

As board member Dick Endresen said, in one way or another, the NKSD now must select the lesser of two evils at the site. Two options are offered there: One is on a former Nike missile site, the other adjacent to environmentally-sensitive areas.

What to do? What to do?

To its credit, the NKSD has worked diligently with the community on the new high school and has at the very least allowed concerns to be aired during the numerous meetings on this subject. But board members are now coming to grips with the fact that they didn’t have all the necessary pieces before being asked to put the high school puzzle together.

Not a good thing when one considers that KHS will impact students for years to come.

Additionally, new board members are questioning the site altogether — something that concerned residents have been doing for one reason or another for several months.

For now, things are moving forward at the 62-acre property and the NKSD is working hard to answer questions that should have already been answered.

Better late than never.

But hopefully it’s not too late.Location, location, location. Perhaps the North Kitsap School District should have considered the old real estate mantra before setting its sights on land that looks to be causing more controversy than consensus on West Kingston Road.
