More than just a coffeehouse

POULSBO — Looks can be deceiving, especially when driving past Caffe Cocina on Finn Hill Road.

What appears at first glance to be a drive-thru coffee shop operated out of someone’s home is actually far more than meets the eye.

“Very few people know we have indoor dining and a patio,” said Holly Smith, who along with Shelly Love, opened the business’ doors in July.

The two are best friends who have spent years going to coffeehouses in search of the perfect blend all the while gathering ideas for a coffee shop of their own, Love said.

“Shelly and I went to Seattle and discovered Caffe Vita and it’s by far the best coffee ever,” Smith said. “People drive for miles for Caffe Vita.”

Because of its affiliation with the Seattle-based roaster, all of Caffe Cocina’s baristas are trained by Caffe Vita staff, she said.

In addition to serving a premium coffee blend, Smith said customer service is equally important.

“We pride ourselves in excellent customer service and we want everyone who comes to our place to feel welcome and know they’re important,” she said.

Even though its drive-thru business accounts for 90 percent of its customers, Caffe Cocina features a spacious, relaxing indoor dining area as well as an outdoor patio for dining on sunny days.

“We strive for something just a cut above and appeal to both young and old,” Love said.

With the name Caffe Cocina, Smith and Love serve up more than espressos, lattes and cappucinos.

“Caffe is Italian for coffee and cocina is Spanish for kitchen,” Smith said. “Shelly is the inspiration in the kitchen.”

During the week, fresh-baked pastries are served in the mornings and lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“We make our own fresh-baked breads daily and people love our salads,” Love said.

All of the recipes are her own, but Love credits executive chef Chris Clemens for helping her along the way.

The lunch menu features a variety of wraps, sandwiches and salads and there’s even something for kids.

“We try to have something for everybody, so parents can come in and eat with their kids,” Love said. “We’re always trying new things.”

While the coffee shop stays busy during the week, word of its Saturday breakfast offerings is quickly spreading.

“We have eggs Benedict and French toast and sometimes we’ll have hand-cut potatoes with eggs,” Smith said. “Men love having a big breakfast.”

Couples have come down for Saturday morning dates and families have stopped by before soccer games, Smith added.

The coffee shop is available for meetings after hours and it features wireless Internet service as well.

“Holly and I love coffee and we love people,” Love said, making Caffe Cocina the perfect place to be.
