Man dies after crashing car into church

A suspected drunk driver died after he fled police and crashed into a Bremerton church early Friday morning.

A suspected drunk driver died after he fled police and crashed into a Bremerton church early Friday morning.

According to the Washington State Patrol, Hugh Melvin Washington, 44, of Mesa, Arizona, was the driver of the vehicle.

According to WSP Trooper Russ Winger, a Bremerton police officer observed Washington drive his white 2002 Volvo S80 over a curb while making a wide turn along Sylvan Way at 1:58 a.m.

When the officer tried to pull Washington over, he fled south on Halverson Avenue.

Washington drove over a hill with a limited view of the road ahead and then flew past the stop sign at the T intersection with Sheridan Road.

The Volvo sped across a grassy lawn and crashed into the Iglesia Ni Cristo church.

Washington died at the scene of the collision. The Washington State Patrol is on scene and will be the investigating agency for this collision.

Winger did not know if the man was wearing a seatbelt.

A wall at the church was damaged by the crash.
