KJH Club brewing up frights

KINGSTON — After taking a few years off, the halls of Kingston Junior High will be back in costume this Halloween as the school’s Builders Club undertakes the creation of a haunted house.

Among ghouls, ghosts and goblins, the Grim Reaper and Captain Keith “Jeff” Richards of the S.S. Scare from the Grave will also be in attendance as the house springs up from 6-9 p.m. Oct. 27 and 28.

And while the night will have a sinister and spooky feel, it’s focus is anything but ominous.

“We’re doing this to help the fifth and sixth graders at Wolfle so that they can visit Camp Coleman,” said Builders Club member Jessie Huntington. “We want to help give out scholarships so they don’t have to pay as much.”

Part of the mission of the Builders Club, which is associated with the Kingston Kiwanis, is to introduce philanthropy to youth with the hope of it becoming a part of their lifestyles, said club leader Fabienne Jorgensen-Finch.

In addition to contributing to Wolfle’s cause at Carpenter Lake, the club is also hoping to assist ShareNet Food Bank by donating a portion of its admission profits to the Kingston center.

Tickets to the haunted house will be $3 with a canned food item or $4 without. For the price of admission, one can take two trips through the scary scenery.

“On Halloween, we wanted to do something for junior high school-aged kids,” Huntington said, noting that other local school “trick-or-treat” events are geared to elementary-aged kids.

“This will be a fun thing that we can do with the school,” Builders Club member Savannah Strickland added.

The club will be spooking up two of the schools’ hallways as part of the event while also setting up some scare in the outdoor commons area. The haunted house will run down the exploratory hallway, out the door to the breezeway and back in through the ninth-grade hallway.

All the scallywags and rum-bellies in attendance should find themselves in good company at the haunted house as this year’s structure is being designed under a pirate theme, Huntington said.

“We have so much, it’s insane,” Jorgensen-Finch said of the prop gear the Builders Club has collected, including a graveyard scene, life-size Grim Reaper. “(The kids) came up with all the themes of all the different rooms and Jessie (Huntington) mapped out the entire thing so that she can look at it and know what goes where.”

Cub members — which has been meeting to discuss the event since early September — said they were looking forward to running the house and scaring people in real life.

“Scaring someone is almost as much of a rush as being scared,” club member Henry Atherton said.
