Kingston loses power during heat wave

KINGSTON — Tuesday, during the time of day when temperatures soared to about 90 degrees, many residents and visitors were stuck in their cars waiting to pass through traffic signals without electricity.

Between about 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. July 10 roughly 2,000 homes and businesses were without power due to a relay that kicked open, according to Puget Sound Energy officials. It was caused when a gust of wind blew loose brush and branches onto a power line, which forced the circuit to trip.

The State Route 104 and State Route 307, also known as Bond Road, intersection as well as the State Route 104, Hansville Road and Miller Bay Road lights were dead, causing backups and delays of about 20 minutes.

Power was restored at about 5:30 p.m. after workers checked the Gunderson Road substation and connecting power lines, officials said.
