Kingston duo espresso-ing themselves

"KINGSTON - With nicknames like Smitters and Jitters, it was only natural that Kris Smith and Karen Felmly should find one another. Not surprisingly, the two exuberant women quickly became friends and, after mulling it over, decided that they had the makings for much more than a relationship - they had the makings of a business. Opening their first ever espresso stop in the Kountry Korners gas station at the intersection of Miller Bay Road and State Route 104, the dynamic duo quickly expanded into their own shop just down the sidewalk. Now, what to name this new enterprise? Hmmm. Smitters and Jitters Espresso was simply too good to resist. "

“KINGSTON – With nicknames like Smitters and Jitters, it was only natural that Kris Smith and Karen Felmly should find one another. Not surprisingly, the two exuberant women quickly became friends and, after mulling it over, decided that they had the makings for much more than a relationship – they had the makings of a business. Despite the new surroundings, Smith said she sometimes misses the early days at the gas station. We did really well over there. It sometimes gets pretty lonely over here, she explained with a laugh. But once we moved here, things really picked up, said Felmly (not Flemly as most people tend to mispronounce it). The business hit its daily income goal in the first week and has been going as strong as a double-shot mocha ever since. While Smitters Smith has lived in Kingston for about six years, Jitters Felmly is relatively new to North Kitsap – moving here about a year ago. When it comes to the beans though, Felmly knows her stuff. She’s been a barista for the past six years and is helping teach the smiling crew at the espresso stop the tricks of the trade. She’s the coffee expert, Smith said. Smitters, who has an accounting background, will handle the business side of the operation. In addition to dog bones and kids’ cards, the group brews up Dillanos coffee for the adult customers. The company, the two agreed, has been great to work with and offers a phenomenal product. Chris Sage, Mallory Wilson and Gloria Lucas round out the group at Smitters and Jitters. We’re such a crew, the spunky Felmly noted. Also baffled by her partner’s rare energy, Smith confided that Jitters isn’t even big on caffeine. People can’t believe she doesn’t drink coffee, she said. Hard to imagine. Actually, she drinks decaf, but switches to root beer in the afternoon. Even that doesn’t slow her down though. So, the big yellow smiley face that serves as the company logo isn’t the only thing spreading happiness in Kingston – the tight-knit crew at Smitters and Jitters is doing its fair share as well. “
