POULSBO — History buffs and wine aficionados have one thing in common.
They both like vintage stuff.
And the Poulsbo Historical Society is hoping that shared interest will translate into financial success for its museum fund-raising efforts. The society, in partnership with the Poulsbo Sons of Norway and Central Market, will host an autumn wine and cheese tasting from 7-10 p.m. Nov. 5 in the Poulsbo Sons of Norway Marine Room.
Tickets for the fund-raiser are $15 per person or $25 per couple and include two tastings per person. Admission can be purchased ahead of time or at the door.
“We have lots of tickets,” historical society president Kathy Hogan said.
Al Moore from Central Market will be choosing the wine and cheese pairings. Meat and cheese platters are being supplied by the Central Market deli through generous donations from some of the store’s suppliers. Moore said he’d never organized a wine tasting before but was more than happy to help the cause.
“There’s a lot of work involved but I think it’ll be fun,” he said.
The tasting will focus on Washington and Northwest wines and will feature whites, reds, ports and sherries. Some of the featured Washington wineries include Waterbrook, Columbia Crest, Chateau Ste. Michelle and Mayhall. One of the more unusual will be Kenwood’s Jack London series.
Additional tasting scripts at three different price points will also be available for sale at the event.
Darwin Schnell from Western Washington Beverage has been helping Moore with the arrangements and will be giving a “Wine 101” course to all of the historical society members who volunteered to be servers for the evening.
“He’ll be letting them know about the pouring and basic characteristics of each of the wines,” Moore said.
The tasting was the idea of historical society member Tom Hall of Central Market, who hosted a similar event a few years ago for the organization.
“We kind of want to make this one an elegant holiday kickoff to our major fund-raising,” Hogan said.
The Nov. 5 event will also include a presentation on the historical society and its project to build a museum on Jensen Way across from the Poulsbo City Hall. The land was purchased in 1999 but a museum has been something that was a dream of society members even before the 13-year-old organization was founded. Hogan said members will be giving an update on the museum and its construction timeline.
The wine tasting event will also feature an auction. Some special donated 3 liter magnums of wine will be auctioned as well as numbers two through six of the society’s limited edition Christmas ornaments. Moore said if there is wine left over from the tastings, they may auction off some bottles or mixed cases as well.
