Herbicide spraying plan prompts meeting of environmental coalition

The recently formed Kitsap Environmental Coalition will be holding a community meeting at the Greater Hansville Community Center tonight at 6:30 p.m.

The Kitsap Environmental Coalition was formed in response to Pope Resources’ plans to spray herbicides on more than 330 acres of their timberlands south of Hansville. One of the herbicides on the list to be sprayed by Pope is glyphosate. The manufacturer of glyphosate, Monsanto, was recently ordered to pay $289 million to a man who claimed that he developed cancer as a direct result of frequent use of the chemical.

The group also started an environmental defense fund through GoFundMe which has reached its goal of $5,000. According to the group’s GoFundMe page, the funds are to be used to pay for the retention of legal counsel in appealing the permit allowing Pope to spray in the area.

The Greater Hansville Community Center is located at 6778 Buck Lake Road NE.
