MISS WEST SOUND ACCEPTING APPLICANTS
The Miss West Sound Scholarship Program is now accepting applications for its first-ever pageant to be held Feb. 20, 2010.
The newly formed Miss West Sound Scholarship Program has been acknowledged by the Miss Washington Organization and the Miss West Sound winner will compete in the Miss Washington pageant. Educational scholarships also are available.
Women from Kitsap County who are at least 17 years old and graduating from high school in June 2010 or will be no older than 24 years of age as of Dec. 31, 2010 are encouraged to apply. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Lutheran Community Services NW Staying Connected Adult Day Program is recruiting volunteers for its Bremerton and Silverdale sites. The Adult Day Center provides a structured social setting where vulnerable seniors and adults with disabilities can participate in stimulating, recreational and social activities as well as a shared noon meal. This allows family caregivers time to run errands, take care of personal appointments or relax with family and friends.
Volunteers assist will small and large group activities, provide individual support to participants and assist with set-up and clean-up. Food handlers’ cards are required for volunteers who help serve lunch. Volunteers assist the site/activity coordinator and training is provided.

FREE TUTORING AVAILABLE
Bremerton School District students may receive free personalized tutoring through the No Child Left Behind Act and the Washington Department of Education.
Each year, the state Department of Education designates eligible schools to receive free tutoring services based on the Washington Assessment of Student Learning results.
This year, Mountain View Middle School and Bremerton High School are eligible to receive free tutoring services. Students who qualify for free or reduced lunch and attend these schools are eligible for the supplemental service.
Upon enrollment, students will receive approximately 20 hours of one-on-one tutoring from an approved and trained tutor in reading and math. All services and materials are free and services may be delivered at home or after school.

HELP A SENIOR
Home Instead Senior Care of Bremerton is sponsoring a community service project called “Be a Santa to a Senior.”
The purpose of the program is to positively impact the community by providing Christmas cheer to seniors who are least likely to receive a present during the Christmas season, many of whom are lonely, financially challenged or in a nursing home and may otherwise not enjoy the Christmas spirit.
Since 2005, Home Instead Senior Care has provided home care services to local seniors. Staff help them maintain their independence by providing assistance with personal care, meal preparation, medication reminders, stand-by assistance if unable to walk safely on their own and help with errands and doctors appointments.

OC MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM
Olympic College students may now begin the Manufacturing Technology Program in any quarter, including the fall.
The program has no prerequisites and can be completed in two quarters. OC worked with local manufacturers to develop the curriculum, so it incorporates the skills manufacturers want and need, such as basic manufacturing concepts, “Lean,” “Green” and “Just in Time” manufacturing, precision measurement, use of hand and machine tools, workplace safety, math skills, interpreting technical drawing, using technology in manufacturing settings and internships.
Students who successfully complete the coursework and require internship will receive a certificate of completion.
Classes are held in the late afternoon and evening at West Sound Technical Skills Center.
