SILVERDALE – A 15-year-old boy walking to a Central Kitsap school was injured this morning after being struck by a pickup truck while crossing an intersection.

According to Deputy Scott Wilson with the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred at about 7:06 a.m. at the intersection of Anderson Hill Road and Provost Road NW/Old Frontier Road NW.

A 36-year-old Central Kitsap man was sitting in his 2004 Chevrolet pickup truck in the left turn lane of Anderson Hill Road at the intersection. The truck was pointed to the west, and was at a flashing yellow left-turn light.

The 15-year-old boy was crossing from west to east along the crosswalk, on the southern part of the intersection.

The boy had right-of-way, but the driver of the truck failed to notice the boy and drove his truck into him, causing the boy to sustain injuries.

Wilson said the injuries were not life-threatening.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived at 7:09 a.m. and the boy was transported to Harrison Medical Center.

The driver was cited for failure to yield to the pedestrian.

Wilson said neither drugs nor alcohol was a factor. The driver did not flee the scene, Wilson said.

Wilson said that now that school is back in session that drivers needed to exercise greater caution and needed to obey lower speed limits around schools.

Wilson added that the majority of traffic offenders in school zones were parents in a hurry to drop their kids off at school and get to work on time.
