City sets schedule for hiring new police chief

The city will have completed a job description by June 15. Starting June 20, the city will conduct a job search. The plan calls for interviewing the finalist for the position Aug. 15.

As part of the city’s search for a new police chief, Mayor Becky Erickson announced she has met with Kitsap County Sheriff Gary Simpson and the police chief of Bremerton and Bainbridge Island to solicit their input.

Specifically, she sought guidance on what Poulsbo can do to assure there is no repeat of the problems the city had during the tenure of former chief Alan Townsend.

Townsend resigned in March after investigations into his relationship with a subordinate officer, and his department’s handling of a possible DUI involving a sheriff’s sergeant.

“They were all very helpful — and they all had different ideas,” Erickson said of her consultation with the sheriff and police chiefs.

The city will have completed a job description by June 15. Starting June 20, the city will conduct a job search, with the assistance of the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs.
