Central Kitsap voters overwhelmingly approved a levy renewal in Tuesday’s special election, with more than 61 percent voting “yes,” according to preliminary results.

Superintendent Greg Lynch said cuts are almost inevitable — the district is waiting on the state Legislature to approve a supplemental budget in March — but the district has a record of sheltering the classroom.

“The majority of our resources need to be focused on classroom, that is our focus,” said Lynch, who added it was too early to specify where cuts could be made.

The district has said its all-day kindergarten program, unsupported by the state, may be scaled back as the state grapples with a $2.6 billion budget deficit.

About 61.6 percent of voters voted “yes,” or 9,035, according to Kitsap County Auditor’s Office numbers released after the first round of counting.

About 38.4 percent voted “no,” or 5,629 votes.
