Charging papers in the first-degree murder case against Bremerton resident Jason A. Salas, 29, paint a chilling picture of the events that unfolded Wednesday night at a home located at 3422 Almira Drive.

The probable cause statement prepared by Bremerton police lays out Salas’ confession to killing his mother’s husband, Gillbert Sablan, 54, while five young children, including two of his own kids, were in the home.

The probable cause statement prepared by police also includes statements from a nearby neighbor. She said that she heard a commotion and saw Salas, who she didn’t know by name, emerge from the home a short time later and drop a crowbar. He then went inside and grabbed the kids.

“She said she heard him tell the kids, ‘He is an evil, evil man. That is not your papa. He is an evil man,'” the police report states. “The male then left in a vehicle with the children after telling her, ‘Sorry for all the noise.'”

While being interviewed by police after his arrest about 10 minutes after the murder was discovered, Salas was covered with blood droplets on his shirt, pants and shoes and appeared to have organic matter stuck to his glasses.

“Salas admitted to killing Sablan with a crowbar, stating at one point, ‘I could’ve did this a long, long time ago. We just never got along,'” states a police report. “When he was asked what provoked the attack today, Salas didn’t have an answer other than, ‘Today is a beautiful day, 11/13/13. It’s abeautiful day, a good day.'”

Salas told officers that he slept at the Almira Drive residence the previous night and left when his mother departed for work, around 1 p.m. He said that he ran errands and returned to the house around 7:45 p.m. Sablan and five children were in the house, including two of Salas’s children, and he said he wanted them to be there when he killed Sablan.

“Salas then stated, ‘It was a good day to get this done, I can hear the signs all around me,'” the police reports states. “Salas said that one of his sons went to a neighbor’s house to get a haircut, but continued, “The other kids had to see this, to kill (his voice faded out), to get rid of the bad man.”

Salas then told officers about going to his truck and retrieving a knife and a “homemade baton” which he secreted in his waistband and in his pant leg. Then he said he saw a crowbar in the bed of his truck and he thought that the crowbar would be perfect, so he grabbed it too. Salas returned to the residence and placed the crowbar on the porch and knocked on the door. He said that he heard Sablan yell for his nephew to get the door and he did.

Salas told police that he entered the residence, found his son, looked him in the eyes, kissed his head and told his son that he loved him.

“Salas said that he then returned to the porch, grabbed the crowbar and crossed himself,” the police report states. “Salas then said, ‘I used my stick and did three home runs. I hit him in the head, I hit him in the face and he fell from the chair facedown. I just hit him three to four times.’ Salas says after Sablan was down, the children were crying and he told them not to cry for the evil man. It should be noted that the observed injuries to Sablan seemed consistent with several forceful strikes to the head and face with a crowbar, as described by Salas.”

Several times during the interview with officers, Salas said that Sablan was evil and that he had to be stopped. Salas alluded to Sablan either abusing the children physically or mentally and made one off-hand comment about child pornography.

“When we asked him if he had ever seen Sablan do anything to the children, Salas said that he had not, but that he could just tell somethingwas going on by watching the children,” the police report states. “He confirmed that none of the children had ever reported abuse (mental, sexual or physical) at the hands of Sablan but said that he could just tell.”
