SILVERDALE — Two boys were airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after they fell from a third floor bedroom window in the Ridgetop area of Silverdale May 24.

The incident occurred at Trillium Heights Apartments around 1:12 p.m., according to Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Scott Wilson.

The apartments are located in the 12200 block of Daphne Lane NW. A maintenance technician working nearby heard the two youngsters crying and went to investigate. He found them lying on the ground and called 911.

Medic and engine units from Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue responded to render emergency first aid. The two boys, ages one and four, were transported to Harrison Medical Center in Silverdale for transfer into the care of Airlift Northwest and subsequent helicopter transport to Seattle.

The boys were in the bedroom for a nap. The children’s mother was at home in the apartment’s living room.

Kitsap Count Sheriff’s detectives are investigating the incident.

“While this type of mishap doesn’t happen frequently, it’s not uncommon for incidents of this nature to occur as weather temperatures begins to rise and windows are left open for aeration,” KCSO stated in a press release.

“Window screens typically are not manufactured to hold the body weight of children. They will readily give way and fall off. Windows left open should be secured in a manner that will prevent a child from being able crawl out or open the window further.”
