POULSBO — When the North Kitsap High School boys’ basketball team moves into a new gym next year, it will have a new coach.

Bob Fronk, who has coached the Vikings for six season, resigned this week.

Fronk’s North Kitsap team went to districts two seasons ago, capping a 15-game win streak, but this season was less successful, as the Vikings went 2-17 and won only one league game — their final one.

“Last season was frustrating for all involved,” Fronk said. “No one was more frustrated than I.”

He said, “A change was needed.”

Fronk said he is grateful to North Kitsap High School for giving him the opportunity to be head coach, and to his players for giving him so many positive memories.

He said he remembers the team’s intense rivalry with Bainbridge Island, especially when the two both dwelled in the Oympic League; the rivalry with Bremerton, which saw the Vikings play, for once, in a packed, roaring-loud gym this year; and the 15-game winning streak of two seasons ago, which was kept alive by an overtime win in Port Townsend.

“I’m proud of where we got the program,” Fronk said. “Certainly, it would have been nice to be a first-place kind of program and compete our way to the state tournament. But my goal was to be competitive.”

Before coaching at North Kitsap, where he is a counselor, Fronk was an assistant at St. Martin’s College in Lacey and Bellevue Community College. He was an assistant at both schools.

He played basketball for the University of Washington.

Scott McKay, the athletics coordinator for the district, has already begun the search for a new head coach; the job has been posted by the district, and McKay expects names to begin trickling in soon.

The job will remain open for several weeks, and candidates will then be screened and interview by a committee.

McKay isn’t sure when a hire may be made, but he hopes it is by May 1.

The new coach won’t be allowed to contact players immediately because of Washington Interscholastic Athletics Association rules.

He will be able to begin settling up summer camps, leagues or tournaments.
