BI’s 1st Asian Festival coming in May

A number of events will take place in May as part of the 1st Asian Arts and Heritage Festival.

It starts with a Moonlight Market May 3 with activities and information on other events.

On May 12 at the Filipino American Community Hall there will be Bingo with a cultural potluck. Lunch is at noon and Bingo at 1 p.m. The event is free with a chance to win money and prizes.

On May 18, there will be forest bathing at Moritani Preserve. Only 20 tickets available. It’s a forestry walk designed to connect with nature in a restorative way.

On May 21 the movie Honor The Mother will be shown at Bainbridge Performing Arts at 7 p.m., followed by a discussion. The movie is about Indipinos who settled on BI and the challenges they faced. International singer and actress Stephanie Reese will perform at the end.

There will be a Strawberry Festival May 25 at Filipino American Community Hall. Starting at noon, there will be a royal court coronation, food and entertainment. Volunteers are needed.

On Japanese Heritage Night May 29 at 6 p.m. there will be songs and readings at Eagle Harbor Books, along with Bainbridge Arts & Crafts. Councilmember Clarence Moriwaki will give the Japanese Exclusion talk, “Let It Never Happen Again.”

There will be two events June 1. At 11 a.m. there will be a free festival with art, food vendors and performances. At 6 p.m. there will be karaoke in an adults-only event with beer and wine.

The events celebrate contributions by Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders.
