Art competition draws a variety of artists

An art competition is the type of event where everyone wins. Sure, only a few lucky artists get tagged with ribbons or cash prizes for their works, but many other artists get exposure that can help their career, and the viewing public is treated to a show that encompasses a broad range of talent and media. Such is the case with the current show at the Sidney Art Gallery in Port Orchard.

The gallery on the hill is hosting the 36th Annual Helen Norris Open Art Show, on display through May 31.

Categories in the competition are oils and acrylics, watercolors, drawing and mixed media.

The contest was judged by Cynthia Tyrrell, owner of Liberty Bay Art School in Poulsbo and art class instructor.

A perusal of the art on display shows a wide range of styles, and talent levels. Some of it is decidedly on the amateur level, while some is very professionally done. There are many Kitsap County artists contributing work to the show, but there are also artists from the Seattle area and Gig Harbor.

From the large number of entries Tyrrell had to select winners in each category. First place winners received $50 cash in addition to their ribbons.

In addition to the winners selected by Tyrrell, gallery patrons have the opportunity to vote for their favorite in the People’s Choice Award. Votes will be tallied at the end of the show and the winner will receive an artist’s gift basket.
