If the dog eats something during a walk and is now lethargic or the cat is suddenly limping, PawDoc Urgent Care staff say their new facility opening May 16 in Port Orchard offers worried pet owners a way to get the animal promptly seen by a veterinarian.
“General practitioners are very busy and hard to get into. When you have something wrong with your pet and call them you can be told, ‘I’m sorry we don’t have anyone to see you until three days from now, ’” said Dr. Dana Isom DVM, medical director of the new clinic.
“We are there to fill the gap between your general practitioner and emergency care. If you are concerned about your pet and you cannot get into your primary doctor, then we are there for you,” Isom said.
PawDoc is the only animal urgent care in South Kitsap, with the nearest others located in Silverdale and Gig Harbor, Isom said.
Dogs and cats are the primary patients in the clinic; however, small household pets, like rabbits, Guinea pigs and rats are also seen, the veterinarian said.
Various ailments can be treated at the clinic.
“If your pet is not eating or vomiting, has a skin or ear infection, has a laceration, or had some sort of traumatic injury, we can see them,” Isom said, adding that allergies, respiratory symptoms, mobility issues and end-of-life services can also be addressed.
“We are trying to take the burden off of emergency rooms that are super busy and to also take the burden off the general practitioner so they can still do their routine wellness exams and keep their routine clients,” Isom said.
Initially, Isom will handle examinations. Staff will increase as the business grows, she said.
Isom previously performed urgent care work at a practice in Bainbridge Island. She moved to the area from Texas two years ago. She earned her veterinary degree from Texas A&M University in 2011. Her love of animals extends to her home, where she has two dogs and four cats.
PawDoc is owned by the Lakefield Veterinary Group. The company is a veterinary practice acquisition company, based in Kent, with over 80 locations.
The clinic is located at 1730 Pottery Ave., Ste 120. Hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday through Monday.
