A tour of Central Kitsap High School

Central Kitsap voters will be asked in February to approve $220 million in funding to build a new CK high school and new CK middle school, and to make a host of other district-wide building improvements.

Here is a photo tour of CKHS that shows the building’s condition.

One of CKHS’s 12 portable classrooms, foreground, sits outside the 1942 main building. CKHS has 46 classrooms, 12 of which are portables. The brick facade was the best part of the building, a school official said, thus the building looks pretty good to anyone just driving past. Inside, however, the building exudes a sense of tiredness and of being worn-out.

A main hallway just off the main CKHS entrance. The building lacks ceiling-mounted fire suppression sprinklers and is not up to code. The building is also not up to seismic code.

This non-illuminated fire exit sign sits atop a door in a windowless room. The temperature inside the room is also hotter than the rest of the building due to problems with airflow.

This classroom was formerly a loading dock room. The loading dock door can be raised three feet high and a screen (pictured next to door) placed under it to allow fresh air in. The room is no longer used for loading supplies. Instead, supplies are hand-trucked in through another door.

Foam cushions are used in this stairwell which has a low ceiling.

There are several stoves in the home economics room, but there are no ventilation fans for any of them.

The art room is located in the basement. It was originally the school’s lunch room. The room has asbestos floor tiles.

The boys locker room is located right next to the gym. The gym doors are just to the left of this area. The girls locker room, however, is located several hundred feet away and has an outside entrance.
