A haunting in Kingston | This ‘N’ That | March

Do you remember as kids the fun of telling ghost stories on Halloween, or sitting around a campfire in the dark getting chills up and down your spine?

Do you remember as kids the fun of telling ghost stories on Halloween, or sitting around a campfire in the dark getting chills up and down your spine?

Sure you do. Those were usually made-up tales. But what about the super natural or paranormal stories we can’t explain? You know the ones that leave us cold and wondering. There are a few old homes around the Kingston area that have reported strange occurrences throughout the years.
One family I know well, has for many years lived with something not of the natural world as we understand it. It started years ago when the family bought a lovely old Victorian house they fell in love with. In this family were two adorable little girls, ages 6 and 3, who shared a pretty ground-floor bedroom with twin beds.

I stopped by to visit with the young mother one afternoon after the girls were put down for a nap, which usually lasted about an hour or so. The bedroom door was open. My friend and I were sitting comfortably in the kitchen by the wood range warming ourselves, when we both heard the girls giggling in their room.
The mother hollered in for them to stop playing and go to sleep. Silence… then, once more, the low laughing. The mother hollered again, “you girls quiet down and take your nap or no cookies when you get up.”

The next time we heard them we went to peek in, but oddly enough the girls were sound asleep. Puzzled we went back into the kitchen to find the chain ceiling light swinging strongly back and forth and heard the laughter again. It wasn’t frightening, just a teasing sound. This was not the first or last time a child was heard laughing when there were no children in the house. It continued even after the girls had grown up and moved into their own homes.

There have been times when other entities of some sort have been felt, but never malevolent. The owner says there have been times when she has felt like there was a comfortable protective feeling about her. It is as if they live together in relationship of peace… that is until lately. Something has changed. They received a visit from a young relative who, a month before, had lived through a horrifying experience with a loved ones’ death. It was due to the way it happened and what she had seen. It was as though the stress of the emotional mental state of this person had brought some upset spirit, for want of a better description, into the home. The visitor was heartbroken and in a serious mental state.

When she went to the fridge for a cold drink, a cup literally flew at her from a shelf behind her. Two witnesses saw it and could not believe their eyes. It was after this visit that the problems really began. The sound of someone walking up the wooden stairs to the owner’s bedroom, that was also heard by another family member in a room down the hall, but no one was there. Then came the feeling that something angry was standing by the owner’s bed. Weird noises were heard over and over.

After a few sleepless nights because of disturbances, the owner left a recording machine on all night by the bed. I listened a few days later and could hear the noises of her coughing in her sleep, and later in the night a low static male voice barely audible sounding like “hush up-hush-up.” She was the only one in the room.

At this time the house has quieted, but the waiting for something more to happen, and when, is most unnerving for the owner who has lived in her charming home for over 30 years. If you have a true story from our area please e-mail it to me at jacquethorn@yahoo.com I am collecting them for curiosity’s sake. I have a story of my own home to tell.
