Rotary Club swinging hammers and clubs

KINGSTON —At 100 years old, the Kingston Cooperative Preschool schoolhouse can be forgiven some flaws.

This spring, Rotary Club of Kingston–North Kitsap is fixing problems that have plagued the building for decades.

The club adopted the building as one of its annual service projects because it fit the organization’s mission of helping schools and parks, Rotary Club President Skip Peters said. The preschool building sits at Kola Kole Park in downtown Kingston and serves about 50 students.

“It’s hard to find a project that’s doable, that helps a lot of people,” Peters said.

Peters, a former carpenter, has been leading work parties at the school that started in April and will likely last until fall.

Some of the fixes are minor — molding needs replaced and the front door refitted. Others address major safety concerns, like rotting decks, steep stairs and a tiny fire escape.

The club has already replaced hand rails, decks and stairs at the school and poured a wheelchair- accessible ramp. Peters said the club is looking for specialists to help with wiring, gutter replacement and the installation of a small granite countertop.

Though there is plenty left to finish, Peters said he’s already heard positive feedback, especially after replacing the school’s steep front staircase.

“I got a lot of nice comments from parents,” Peters said.
