Embracing sumi-e

Port Orchard art galleries feature ancient art of the Far East through local and regional works this month.

The term “sumi” roughly means “ink” in Japanese.

It’s the type of ink used in the famous eastern calligraphy, a very Tai Chi, ultimate balance achieving style of brush painting called sumi-e in Japanese. The quick-stroked ink and wash style aims to depict the spirit rather than resemble an object. It’s an ancient and transcendent art form that’s been practiced for generations in the East.

This month, it’s being embraced across the Western Washington town of Port Orchard.

The Sidney Art Gallery, at 202 Sidney Ave. in Port Orchard, is hosting two out-of-towners — Tacoma artist Fumiko Kimura and Lakewood artist Frank Kawasaki — in their show “The Secrets of Spring” April 2-25. A reception including demonstrations is slated for 1-3 p.m. April 12.

The Manchester Gallery, down the road at 724 Bay St., kicks off a six-session series of sumi classes with local artist Patrice Bruzas at 10 a.m. April 4. Limited space is available for the Manchester classes, to register call (360) 895-4270. WU
