Dvds, wine and woo: it’s dinner and a movie for two

Joker's Peace: Film houses in Bremerton and Bainbridge have your back with romantic classics.

Alright fellows, tomorrow is the big day (for the ladies).

There’s probably a few readers out there, most likely of the male persuasion, who are scratching their heads while they pick up a copy of What’s Up for the first time this year with the desperate hope of finding an elegant Valentine’s Day affair which will woo their respective woman and secure their stature on the romantic ladder.

Sorry chaps, elegance is largely out of the question.

The posh places providing such atmosphere are often loaded with reservations made weeks in advance.

Realistically speaking, you are going to have to take another road. Me, too.

Perhaps a road less traveled, maybe something tender like a shower of roses and chocolates matched with soft music and your own “private ballroom”. (Hopefully there are flowers left at the flower shop).

Or you could take to the open road and listen the auto companies’ advice that the fastest way to a woman’s heart is through the gas pedal (probably a little late in the game for that).

Most likely, with such a limited amount of time on our hands, we’re going to end up on common ground, taking the sure-fire route of the steadfast dinner and movie.

Bremerton’s Admiral Theatre’s already got it all planned out for you.

As they do annually, the chefs at the Admiral will be cooking up a romantic meal while the theater will bring what is possibly the most classic romantic movie of all time — “Casablanca.” Dinner starts at 5:30 p.m., movie at 7 p.m. Feb. 14. Tickets are $55 for the whole thing, $7 for the flick. Call (360) 373-6743 for details and reservations.

But in terms of the romantic ladder, the 1942 film is only likely to get you so far, unless your date is still turned on by Humphrey Bogart.

He’s doing his thing in this classic 40s-era picture, wearing a fedora and choosing between “love and virtue” as they say.

On Bainbridge for Valentine’s Day evening, the Sidney Pollack-directed 1973 picture “The Way We Were” will be showing as part of the Lynwood Theatre’s classic nights — 7:30 p.m., Feb. 14. Tickets are $7.50.

In this case, dinner is on you, but there’ll be no need for popcorn at the theater because your date will likely eat up the chemistry on screen between Robert Redford and Barbara Streisand as Katie and Hubbell.

They’re two star-crossed lovers whose immense differences in upbringing and frame of mind mean nothing in the face of love. But as those differences surface and cause a divide when Hubbell ends up alienated in the arms of another woman.

By the end of the flick, he realizes that no one will ever believe in him the way Katie once did, but all that they will ever be able to share is a memory of … the way they were.

A bit cheesy for you? Me too, but for some reason, unbeknownst to many of us with a Y chromosome, ladies love the cheese, so suck it up.

Give your girl what she needs.
