SK students display creative talent at Night of the Arts

South Kitsap High School transformed its commons into a vibrant celebration of student creativity during its third-annual Night of the Arts May 28.

The free community event featured a variety of student artwork, live performances, and culinary treats, all created and presented by SK students.

On display were sculptures, ceramics, and advanced ceramics pieces, as well as visual work from beginning drawing and painting classes. Mediums included tempera, acrylic, watercolor, and Sharpie-based designs. Digital and design projects included photography, animation, 3D modeling, and graphic art from both beginning and advanced students.

New this year were woodshop and welding projects, highlighting expanding opportunities in the school’s Career and Technical Education program.

Live entertainment was provided throughout the evening, with performances from the SK jazz band, choir, orchestra, and drama students.

One featured artist, Alivia Barnes, used ceramics to explore how form influences function.

“By crafting floral-shaped plates, I experiment with techniques to refine my aesthetic and process,” Barnes wrote in her artist statement. “Process taught me that great work doesn’t always require excessive time. Sometimes, simplicity and efficiency lead to strong results.”

Another student, Kiera Murray, shared how her ceramic work aims to uplift and connect with others.

“I want my work to be approachable, something that invites a simple, joyful reaction,” she said. “My sculptural pieces are lighthearted. I aim to craft pieces that spark a smile, whether through playful forms, organic shapes, or vibrant details.”

Murray added that nature and calming color palettes often inspire her work with both wheel-thrown and sculpted ceramics.
