Mayor didn’t act alone on City Hall

ner on Front Street, I feel that I need to participate in the discussion on the race for mayor of Poulsbo. There are many rumors and misinformation as election time gets closer. Many people do not understand that the mayor doesn’t have the authority to make decisions on her own. The City Council members all have a vote. They voted unanimously for the funding of the new city hall and for the location in the downtown area.

The mayor never gets a vote, unless there is a tie. She cannot vote on money issues, real estate or ordinances. Actual legislation (law) comes from the council members, not the mayor. So if people blame the current mayor for what they don’t like, they need to do some research.

Now, the mayor can listen to the people of Poulsbo and express her desires to the city council, but again, she cannot decide that the new city hall will be where she wants it to be or decide on how much money to spend on her own.

The City Hall project was a unanimous vote by the City Council members. For someone on that council now to say she didn’t approve or that it was too expensive, please note that she voted for it and many of the other items up for discussion.

Among some of Kathryn Quade’s achievements since becoming mayor in 2006 are the Harrison Medical Center oncology unit on 10th Avenue, the Vetter Homestead (Washington State’s largest self-help housing project) and completion of the State Route 305 improvement project.

Since Quade has been mayor, her door has been open to the business community and the townspeople. She has worked to make the government more responsive to this community. I have known Quade since the time she was a member on the City Council and I personally know that she loves and cares about our city. Please get to know the issues, go and read the city’s Web site to see the voting records of the council members and re-elect Quade as mayor of Poulsbo.
